LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga isn’t a re-release with more content; it’s not even a remaster. Instead, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is an entirely new game that has been redesigned from the ground-up to give players the ultimate Star Wars experience in LEGO form. This has been accomplished through the use of an all-new game engine, the implementation of an open world sandbox, and a total revamp of the combat system, among many other things.
What makes next year’s LEGO Star Wars game a hugely anticipated title amongst gamers is that it’s a culmination of the entire Skywalker saga – all three Star Wars trilogies, so that means Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story aren’t included – and the gameplay has been modernized in order to fit within other 2019 and 2020 video games. But there’s so much more in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga than just extra story and quality of life upgrades.
Over the years, Traveller’s Tales has made a name for themselves by becoming the leaders of LEGO video games, and the LEGO Star Wars series is undoubtedly one of the more popular franchises. Beginning with LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game in 2005, there have been five installments, the last of which was 2016’s LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rather than continuing to develop new games based on each movie in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Traveller’s Tales decided to spend a few years developing a complete ode to the Star Wars saga – and so, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga happened.
First teased at Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was officially revealed during the Xbox Briefing at E3 2019 in early June, and Screen Rant was given a behind-closed-doors presentation of the game later that week, with one of the developers from TT Games playing through a mission from the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Based on this demo as well as comments from the developers, we learned quite a bit about the new (and potentially final?) LEGO Star Wars title. Here’s everything you need to know:
- LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is an open world game, which offers a decidedly different experience since the original games were linear in nature. This time around, players can freely explore the massive open world setting with whichever characters they choose – unless they are doing a story mission, of course.
- Being a LEGO game, everything was recreated using LEGOs first and then put in the title. Even the Great Pit of Carkoon was made in LEGO form. However, structures and certain other assets were smoothed out and given better textures in order to exude a more realistic feel.
- Players can interact with all sorts of characters. In our demo, the player accepted a side quest from a gonk droid, and then had to combat Tusken Raiders. Interestingly, the developer had to switch from playing as Lando to C-3PO so that he could understand what the droid was saying.
- Combat has been given a complete overhaul. In addition to enemies being given health bars – which means they are no longer one hit kills – a combo system has been implemented. Simply put, players can achieve higher combos by performing different attacks. That’s all it takes: stringing together new combos increases the combo counter.
- Furthermore, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga now has ADS, which makes using Chewbacca’s Bowcaster a tad bit more difficult. Using ADS is important, too, since dynamic dismemberment is also a thing this time around.
- Every planet from the Star Wars saga is in the game. Every. Planet. (One of the developers whose job was to design the planets tried and failed to list every single one since there are so many.) Because of this, LEGO Star Wars is no longer about simply completing levels but rather completing entire worlds.
- Having said that, there are still missions. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga consists of 45 missions in total, five missions for each movie.
- Another aspect of the open world is being able to fly the Millennium Falcon from planet to planet and even participate in space battles.
- Of course, being a Star Wars game, the Force plays an important part in the gameplay experience. And now, the Force can be used on several more objects as well as multiple objects at once. Just as Luke was being trained to stack rocks on top of each other by using the Force in The Empire Strikes Back, players can do just that in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
- Fixed camera angles are gone now. Players can freely move the camera around.
- Rather than the gold from the original LEGO games, the economy in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga consists of Kyber Bricks, but TT Games assured us real-life money won’t be used.
Unfortunately, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga doesn’t release until 2020. When pressed for a time-frame, Traveller’s Tale told Screen Rant that they weren’t ready to share that information just yet. But given that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker doesn’t release until mid-December, it stands to reason that this game will hit store shelves sometime in late spring, which would give the developers ample time to complete the Episode IX portion of the game. It’s unlikely that Lucasfilm would be willing to share details regarding the sequel with third-party studios, even for a game like LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
